Student Support and Wellbeing

A clearly defined and well-resourced system of pastoral care and discipline is maintained in CBC, the focus of which is the welfare of all pupils.

  • Each Junior Cycle class has its own dedicated Mentor teacher who has special responsibility for the pupils in his/her charge.

  • Senior Cycle classes are assigned Class Teachers who support students throughout this important stage of their development.

A Year Head takes overall charge of each year group, supported by a designated Deputy Principal.

  • The First Year Head is situated full time in the First Year area and takes a personal interest in each new pupil and is always available to discuss their progress with parents.

  • Year Heads of Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth Year have their own special focus with priority placed on academic, social and personal development.

  • The Sixth Year Head’s work is directed towards motivating students in their final year in Secondary School to attain the best possible results in the Leaving Certificate Examination. The Year Head has a special role also in helping each Sixth Year pupil to clarify his career/further study objectives .

A comprehensive Career Guidance and Counselling programme is in operation in CBC.  Areas given special attention include:
  • study skills

  • examination technique

  • subject choice for Leaving Certificate

  • careers classes and seminars.

  • Field trips are organised for Senior pupils.

  • Aptitude tests, interests and ability tests and individual interviews

A high quality Wellbeing programme is coordinated by a dedicated team across all year groups and aims to develop an optimistic approach to life and problem solving, developing resilience and strength of character.

Students are encouraged to seek support and help in a climate of trust.

Personal confidential counselling is also available, provided by CBC staff members who have training and expertise in this area.
