Debating

Debating is the second largest extra-curricular activity in the College, and the Debating Society is also the oldest in Christian Brothers College, and indeed all secondary schools in the county. The Society run a city and a national competition, as well as entering all major debating competitions in the country.

Celebrating Excellence: The CBC Debating Society

At the heart of CBC's vibrant community lies the Debating Society. For One hundred and thirteen years it has stood out as a beacon of erudition, enthusiasm, and ambition. Led by our remarkable students, this initiative goes beyond being just a co-curricular activity; it's a journey of personal growth and skill acquisition that prepares them to address life's challenges with integrity, negotiation and tolerance.

Throughout the year, an enthusiastic student committee leads the society with good humour and dedication. Special appreciation is owed to our hard-working President, Paul Scanlan, whose stalwart leadership has been invaluable. Under his guidance, our teams eagerly participate in competitions, whether it's the early morning ventures to Dublin or to the UK for the prestigious Cambridge Union debates.

· Eoghan Dunne and Eoghan O’Brien, Sean McSweeney and Charles Crosbie participated in the prestigious Cambridge Schools Debating final at the Cambridge Union.

· Jonathan Walsh was honoured as the best speaker in the L&H final debate.

· Muhammad Raed Naseer emerged as the National winner and topped the tab in the Matheson Junior Mace.

· Sean McSweeney continues to hone his skills, currently training and competing with Ireland’s National debating team.

· Sean McSweeney also clinched the overall victory in Trinity’s Phil Society competition.

· Charles Crosbie is working with Ireland’s National Development team.

· Charlie Liang and Isaac Scallan Cotter made it to the finals in the October Leagues, with Charlie Coakley securing the top spot on the tab.

· Sean Ahern emerged triumphant in the Cork City Schools debate.

· Paul Scanlan distinguished himself as the top individual speaker and national finalist at UCD.

· Alex Twomey, Guan Hui Lin, and Thomas Hiras were recognised as Best Delegates at NATMUN held at UCC.

These achievements underscore the dedication, talent, and hard work of our debaters.

Their support in working alongside Ms Calvert, Patron of the CBC Debating Society, has been exemplary.

We celebrate their success and look forward to witnessing their continued growth and accomplishments in the years to come.
