19 Dec 2008: Charitable Activities update

The past academic year was a very busy and successful one for charitable events in CBC. As in previous years, a committee was formed to organise all of the events, Mr Martin
Owens served as chairperson, and was ably assisted by Mr Alan Hickey, Ms Lorna Mulvany, Mr Edmond Hussey, Mr Simon Kelliher and Ms Marie Delaney. The charities selected to be
the recipients of donations at Christmas were: Cork Simon, St Vincent De Paul, the Edith
Wilkins Foundation and the Cork Blind Association.
The decision was taken to ask the parents of each boy to contribute twenty euro to the
charitable activities fund and in return the parents received free entry to the Christmas
Concert. In addition, a nonuniform day was arranged and a sizeable sum was collected.
In the New Year charitable activities continued to be successful, and in the Preparatory School pancake sales in all the classes raised considerable funds for Cork Simon and the Edith Wilkins Foundation.
In March the College presented a cheque to Killian O’Brien, Fourth Year (pictured below) to partly fund his successful application to go to South Africa for one week to build houses on behalf of the Niall Mellon Township Trust. In May the School presented a cheque to Cian Kerrigan, Fifth Year. In June Cian travelled to Belarus for a month to work as a volunteer on a holiday programme for the children of the Belarusian Orphanage Project. A non-uniform day was organised in April to fund the costs of both Killian’s and Cian’s projects.
