15 Apr 2008: Student Council Update

This year in CBC, the decision was taken to expand the role of the Student Council. C.B.C. has a long tradition of student representation and this has mainly occurred at sixth year level. The role of the sixth years was to liaise with the school authorities about issues concerning the students in sixth year but also the main student body. They were concerned with issues such as the Graduation Ball and the Year Book. This year we decided to expand the representation across the school to all years. The aim of this was to let students from all class groups have a say in issues that affect them.

With this in mind in the second part of the year, we held elections from each class group to select a student representative. Due to the size of the school, we decided to break the Council into two groups. One Council for junior students and one for senior students. We also decided to have a steering committee between the two groups.

In order to let the students see what a student council was about the steering committee attended a training day in Limerick which was run by Fr. Sean O’Brien in conjunction with the Edmund Rice Schools Trust. There were schools from all over Munster and C.B.C. students had to work with student councils from councils in other school.

This day followed up by a training day run by Fr. Sean O’Brien from the main student councils. These were great days and gave the students an overview of the role of the council, how they should work in a committee setting etc.

Towards the end of the year, the Council started to look at issues, which the students felt, were of more immediate concern to them. We looked at issues such as school facilities, school sporting activities, and the new timetable. We also looked at working with the Parent’s Council in areas such as charitable fundraising the school newsletter. There was a lot of good work completed this year by establishing the Council right across the school. We have also highlighted areas, which the Council will look at early next year.
